Since being introduced for the first time at the Grenoble Winter Olympics in 1968, an official Olympic mascot has been used for promotional purposes at all Olympic Games. This mascot is usually some kind of animal indigenous to the host region, or in some cases a human being representing the local area's cultural heritage.
The 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck and Seefeld also need a mascot. Therefore, in order to come up with a truly authentic design, a competition was created to allow everyone to take part in the development process of the official YOG 2012 mascot.
The eye-catching, dynamic look of the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games is characterised by a colourful patchwork of pixels. Combining the quadratic shape of the Innsbruck 2012 logo with the colours of the Olympic Rings, the idea was to create a 'pixel virus' which will spread to all the athletes, fans and spectators via the internet between now and the Games in January 2012 and enable everyone to feel and experience the YOG motto: "Be part of it!"
After consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the official Games mascot, 'Yoggl', was presented to the public during the Youth Olympic Games Snow Festival in February 2011.
