10 February 2012
The 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games, which took place in Innsbruck, Seefeld and Kühtai between 13 and 22 January 2012, wrote history. A total of 1059 athletes from 70 nations were on hand to witness Innsbruck welcome the Olympic Family for the third time. To celebrate the event, the Austrian state broadcaster ORF has produced a documentary about the Games which will be shown on television on Saturday, 11 February 2012 from 14:25 to 15:50 (ORF 1) and on Wednesday 22 from 20:15 to 21.45 (ORF SPORT+).
The performance of the host nation was also historic, with the Youth Olympic Team Austria claiming no fewer than 14 medals – six of them gold – to underline their reputation as one of the world's top winter-sports nations. "One should be careful about using superlatives, especially when it comes to youth sport, but there really is no other way of putting it: Austria presented itself from its best side as a host nation and in the competitions. These were ten wonderful days," explains Karl Stoss, president of the Austrian Olympic Committee.
In the documentary entitled 'Die wunderbaren Tage von Innsbruck 2012' ('The Wonderful Days of Innsbruck 2012'), Gabriela Jahn looks back on the highlights of Team Austria's performance at the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games. As well as presenting the best images from the Opening Ceremony and sports competitions, the documentary also goes behind the scenes and gets to know the Austrian medal winners.
In the Alpine Skiing Parallel Team Event, it was Martina Rettenwender, Christina Ager, Marco Schwarz and Mathias Graf who kept their nerve to grab gold, with Marco Schwarz emerging as the star of the Games as he also claimed top spot in the Giant Slalom and Slalom. One of the big surprises of the Games was Elisabeth Gram, who was crowned Youth Olympic Champion after an impressive display in the Halfpipe event, with Michaela Heider ensuring an Austrian double in the Freestyle events with gold in the Skicross. Top favourite Miriam-Stefanie Kastlunger grabbed gold in Women's Luge, while Carina Mair and Stefan Geisler both took silver in Skeleton, the women's ice hockey team marched all the way to the final and Benjamin Maier/Robert Ofensberger took second place in Bobsleigh. Bronze went to Christina Ager (Alpine Skiing/Super-G), Mathias Graf (Alpine Skiing/Slalom), Melanie Brantner (Short Track Speed Skating/international team), and Miriam-Stefanie Kastlunger, Armin Frauscher and Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller (Luge/Team Event).
