Marco Schwarz claims third gold medal
19 January 2012
Austria's Marco Schwarz has claimed his third gold medal of the Games with top spot in the Giant Slalom after victories in Super-G and the Mixed Parallel Team Event earlier in the week.
The victory for Schwarz is the latest in a line of fine results for the Youth Olympic Team Austria in the Alpine events at Innsbruck 2012.
Despite a mistake, Schwarz was hot on the heels of leader Miha Hrobat after the first run, just 36th hundreds of a second behind the Slovenian. However, a phenomenal second run saw take the lead, with Hrobat straddling a gate as he looked to find valuable time. Nobody else could get near the Austrian, who took the win with an advantage of 0.40 ahead of Italy's Hannes Zingerle and Switzerland's Schweizer Sandro Simonet.
"It is an incredible feeling to be a triple Youth Olympic champion," beamed Schwarz after the race. "One thing is for sure - I am going to sleep well tonight!"
Coach Gert Ehn was just as thrilled with the shooting star's performance: "I have seen a lot of things during my time on the World Cup circuit, but the coolness he has is just incredible. I take my hat off to him."
1 SCHWARZ Marco 1:51.70
2 ZINGERLE Hannes +0.40
3 SIMONET Sandro +0.63
