​Figure skating is a sport in which athletes perform spins, jumps and other intricate and athletic moves on ice. At the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games the competitions are divided into the following events: Men's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Pairs and Ice Dance.

The Singles and Pairs skating competitions each consist of a short programme and a free-skating element. The teams competing in the Pairs event comprise one man and one woman performing Singles elements in unison, as well as pair-specific elements such as throw jumps. The Ice Dance couples focus on intricate footwork performed in close dance holds, all executed in time with the music.

At the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games there will also be a Mixed-NOC Team Event with one woman (Singles), one man (Singles) and one Ice Dance couple, all from different countries, forming a team.
