Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is an extremely fast team sport with intense physical contact played on ice, where skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team's goal. At the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games there will be a Men's 5-Team Tournament and a Women's 5-Team Tournament. Each tournament will comprise five teams, with national teams consisting of 17 players. As well as the 5-Team Tournament, an Individual Skills Challenge for male and female players will be held in Innsbruck for the very first time in the history of the Olympic Games. This event will see the best 15 male and best 15 female athletes from nations other than those which have qualified to compete in the main ice hockey tournament go up against each other. Before being invited to the Individual Skills Challenge, however, these athletes must qualify through a global qualification programme based on a series of tests designed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
