In short track speed skating, four skaters compete on a111.12-metre oval track on an ice hockey rink (30m x 60m). In accordance withthe knock-out system, the first two finishers of each heat qualify for thenext round. Strategy and tactics are important in short track speed skating, and it is often not the fastest but the smartest skater who wins. The spectacular overtaking manouevres make for action-packed races. At the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games, the young male and femaletrack skaters will compete in 500m and 1000m races as well as in a Mixed-NOC Team Relay where teams will consist oftwo women and two men from different countries.​
