Ski jumping
The 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games will, for the very first time in Olympic history, feature an individual ski jumping event for women. As well as this debut there will also be the traditional men's individual competition as well and another Olympic premiere: a Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Mixed Team competition for one man, one woman and one Nordic Combined athlete from the same country.
The youngathletes will compete on the normal hill (HS 75). In ski jumping, it is absolutely essential to have the right technique in order to perform aprecise and well-timed takeoff.Once in the air, to maximize lift and minimize drag, jumpers assume a V-form with their skis and adjust their body position. Competitors are judgedon distance and style; if two jumpers achieve identical distances, the qualityof the landing can often be critical in determining the winner. A range ofstart benches placed at different heights on the run-in enable the judges to selectthe appropriate starting height based on conditions such as wind, temperature, humidity, snow consistency and other factors which can influence thedistance a jumper flies.
