Located approximately 20 km west of Innsbruck, the municipality of Seefeld, together with the nearby villages Leutasch, Scharnitz, Mösern and Reith, offers top recreational and sports facilities during both summer and winter. A 266 km cross-country trail, two ski jumps newly constructed in the 2010/2011 season and state of the art biathlon facilities mean the Seefeld Nordic Centre is the perfect location for the Nordic events of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games.

The Olympic region of Seefeld also has a proud sporting history. The municipality with little more than 3,000 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) has already hosted major winter sports events on three separate occasions. When Innsbruck was selected to host the Winter Olympic Games in 1964, the competitions for Nordic Combined, Cross-Country Skiing and Ski Jumping took place in Seefeld. Followed by a 25,000-strong crowd, many experts consider the Ski Jumping event on the Toni Seelos Ski Jump became one of the best competitions of the 1964 Games.

After the local population of Denver, Colorado, had rejected their city’s plans to organise the 1976 Games, Innsbruck and Seefeld were once again given the honour of hosting the Winter Olympics.

Seefeld was also the first place to host independent Nordic Ski World Championships, in the winter of 1985. Up until then, the Olympic champion had also held the title of world champion in the Nordic disciplines.

Over the past ten years, Seefeld has cemented its role as a central part of the Nordic Combined World Cup. Moreover, the winter sports resort hosted the snowboard Air & Style Contest between 2000 and 2004. An application to host the Nordic Skiing World Championships once again in 2017 is currently being prepared.
