Then and now

Olympic History in Innsbruck

Inspired by a series of old Olympic photos, IOC Young Reporter Iuliia Vynokurova decided to undertake a harder-than-she-thought mission. To recreate those images at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games at Innsbruck, the very city in which they were first shot.

Other than photographing the opening ceremony at Bergisel Stadium, where she had to “run up and down several times to find the right positions,” Vynokurova talked about her most memorable moment: “I shot ski jumping from below the take-off ramp and the athletes were ‘flying’ over me. Just the experience itself is so cool.”

Relive some iconic pictures from the Innsbruck Games of 1964 and 1976 here, and see for yourself their re-creations decades later.
