IOC launches new Youth Olympic Games visual identity “YOG-DNA”

In just 200 days, at 20.10 SGT on 14 August 2010, Singapore will open its doors to 3,600 of the world’s best young athletes for the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). To celebrate the countdown, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has today [26 January] launched the visual identity of the Youth Olympic Games - “YOG-DNA”.

The “YOG-DNA” label can be viewed on the YOG website, “the Cube” www.olympic.org/yog, and will be integrated into all YOG digital and social media concepts in both the build-up to Singapore 2010 and future YOG editions. A film has also been created, which takes the viewer on a journey to understand what it means to have YOG-DNA.

“YOG-DNA” is targeted at young people, not as a logo or a brand, but as a label. It represents the attitudes and freedom of young people and has no restrictions like a traditional “brand”. It is to be used by young people as a stamp of approval for anything that has the “Spirit of the Youth Olympic Games”. The YOG-DNA label will also be amalgamated for the first time into a Youth Olympic Games emblem for Innsbruck 2012, which will be launched in February during the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said, “The 200-day countdown is a great milestone in our journey to the Youth Olympic Games. So much has been achieved over a short space of time and we are now in the final stretch. We are not only building an event for the world’s most talented young athletes, we are creating a platform to communicate to young people worldwide to interact through sport, culture and education, all of which is underpinned by YOG-DNA, the Spirit of the Youth Olympic Games”.

Successful cooperation with student group of the FH Kufstein

Already during the bidding phase for the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games the FH Kufstein “Sports-, Culture & Event Management” has supported the committee in Innsbruck in creating parts of the concept for the “Culture & Education programme” (CEP). Many creative ideas from the group of ten students have already been incorporated in the Bid-Book. The productive cooperation has also been continued in the Winter Semester 2009/10 with a newly established student group. The assignment entails concretizing the various original ideas and working out specific realisation-proposals for the CEP in close coordination with the IYOGOC. The mutual development of an authentic CEP as well as the student’s facilitation to search into an organising committee of a sport-major event are the main objectives of this successful cooperation. A continuation of the collaboration in the Summer Semester 2010 is under discussion.

Youth Olympic Games 2012 are on the right track

The members of the Coordination Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were very pleased with the progress of the preparations of the Youth Olympic Games 2012. Gian Franco Kasper, President of the Coordination Commission is convinced, „our 1048 athletes will find best conditions in the 63 medal decisions at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012 in Innsbruck and Seefeld."

Competence and commitment to youth sports in Tyrol exemplary

In addition to the existing and established disciplines in the Youth Olympic Winter Games in 2012 specifically for young people aged 15 to 19 years slopestyle for men and women and several team competitions - mixed Nations and gender (e.g. mixed ski jumping competition with men and women; Short Track Nations Team Competition)- will be included in the sports program for the first time. "Tyrol, on the one hand, has the required expertise in sports and on the other shows the necessary commitment among young people to secure and sustain its young talents in snow sports. With this combination, Tyrol is the ideal venue for the IOC to host the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in the history of the Olympic movement, "concludes Gian Franco Kasper.

Innsbruck will set new accents in the Olympic Movement

For Gilbert Felli, Olympic Games Executive Director, the Youth Olympic Winter Games represent an historic opportunity. "The new way of the International Olympic Committee to create enthusiasm in young people worldwide for the Olympic values excellence, respect and friendship will continue in Innsbruck, after the Youth Olympic Summer Games 2010 in Singapore . Based on the he cooperation so far, we are very confident, that Innsbruck will set new incentives and approaches for future events, "concludes Gilbert Felli.

Involvement of the Tyrolean population is a priority

The second major pillar of the newly designed Youth Olympic Games establishes above all a Culture and Education Programme, next to top sport events. "Within this framework we would not only like to appeal more to the Tyrolean population and young people in the Tyrol, and also include them in the project" announces Tyrolean Vice-Governor Hannes Gschwentner, who refers to a lot of freedom in the programme layout on the part of the IOC and can imagine events following the example of the Air & Style Contest with youth concerts. "The Youth Olympic Games shall be a great experience not only for the athletes, but also for the whole Tyrolean community and the organisers will make sure about this," states Gschwentner.

Budgetary framework will be significant

"We will put all the measures and activities that we can afford," explains Richard Rubatscher, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Youth Olympic Games 2012 Ltd. Currently, an evaluation and fine tuning of the budget is under way and the cost accounting is in progress. "Budgeting and Controlling go hand and hand. The Youth Olympic Games work will be transparent
We want to set new benchmarks in this area," assured Rubatscher.

The Youth Olympic Winter Games 2012 in Innsbruck and Seefeld will take place from January 13-22. The Coordination Commission will accompany the preparations of the Games.

Presentation of Innsbruck 2012 at the Anniversary Celebration of the Olympic Village

The Olympic Village from 1964 and 1976 is only one commonality between the recent Games in Innsbruck and the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012. An Olympic link, which was used to bridge the gap between past and future, to present the Youth Olympic Games 2012 to the public.
Like 45 years ago, the Youth Olympic Village has been built on the grounds of Innsbruck’s Eugen-Casern. In the middle of the city more than 1,000 athletes will be the first in the new village from January 13th to 22nd 2012 and begin their competitions from there in Innsbruck and Seefeld.

The Organising Committee of the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012 has therefore accepted the invitation with thanks to the festival of the Olympic Village and introduced itself for the first time in a playful presentation with computer simulated snowboarding for interested beginners and advanced boarders in Innsbruck. This simulation required not only fitness, but also coordination from the young, aspiring talents. More than 200, mostly children and young people, attended the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012 stand and tried the interactive video game. All in all, the event was a success for the organisers and the Youth Games 2012 used the event to announce the Games to Innsbruck in an attractive way.
On Youth Day, September 19th the presence of the Youth Winter Games 2012 will continue in front of Innsbruck"s Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and expand to further stations for young and old.

"For the first time in the history of the Winter Olympic Games the best youth athletes between 14 and 18 from over 50 nations will compete against each other. Our goal must be to prepare and operate the Games in the best possible way while maintaining Innsbruck"s long Olympic Tradition. With 1,048 athletes we will welcome about the same amount of athletes as in 1976 in Innsbruck. The number of participating nations and events will be approximately double the amount. A Sport + Media Experience for Young Olympians

Innsbruck 2012 has created a truly innovative concept for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games, a fully integrated sports + media experience designed to inspire young people athletically, culturally and vocationally.

The two-community, two-cluster compact winter sports plan is balanced against a Culture and Education Programme (ECP) that gives each young participant an opportunity to collaborate across cultures in the creation of athlete-generated Internet content that can be shared with the world during the Games. Drawing on theories of innovation management, Innsbruck has designed a media-rich ECP environment where young Olympians can immerse themselves in a series of media platforms—print, television, radio, photography and the Internet—to pursue the creative expression of friendship, excellence and respect while learning to cooperate and collaborate with peers from every continent.

In its stunning natural environment between towering peaks in the middle of the Alps, Innsbruck offers an innovative vision for the Winter Youth Olympic Games that will help transform the sporting event into the new worldwide Youth Olympic Movement the IOC is intent on creating.
